Maple Leafs Beat Red Sox; Will Face Cardinals in Round One

TORONTO - Now the fun begins.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Brantford Red Sox 6-3 on Sunday afternoon to finish their 2021 season with a record of 16-14.

The Red Sox end their season 11-19.

Toronto reliever Brian Sewell picked up the win, tossing two scoreless innings in relief.

Maple Leafs' second basemen Garret Takamatsu ended his season with a bang, going two-for-four with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Red Sox reliever Luca Lombardi took the loss in his lone inning of work, allowing two earned runs on one hit and two walks.

BIGGEST PLAY OF THE GAME: Up 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Maple Leafs' catcher Justin Marra hit a two-run home run to give the Leafs a 6-2 lead.


2. With today's win -- and thanks to the London Majors defeating the Kitchener Panthers today -- the Maple Leafs finish second in the IBL.

4. Four solid innings by starter Zach Sloan today, allowing just one earned run on two hits and one walk. 

The southpaw struck out five Red Sox batters.

13. Takamatsu finishes the season with a league-high 13 doubles.

13 (again). Justin Marra finishes the season with a league-high 13 home runs, one ahead of Takamatsu who finished second with 12 and two ahead of Marcus Knecht, who finished third with 11.

30. Jordan Castaldo finishes with 30 walks, the most in the league.

59. The Leafs finish the season with 59 home runs, the most in the league. The next closest team was the Welland Jackfish with 32.

.442. With a .442 batting average, Leafs' designated hitter Sean Reilly wins the league batting title.

1.325. Takatmstsu finishes with a league-high 1.325 OPS (on-base plus slugging).


- The Leafs will face the Hamilton Cardinals in round one.
