Road Warriors: Leafs Dominate Jackfish in Offensive Outburst

By Noam Streiffer

The Maple Leafs got back in the win column on Saturday night with a decisive 13-6 win over the first-place Welland Jackfish. The Leafs' road dominance continues despite their struggles at home, as they improve to 14-19 on the season.

Wilgenis Alvarado started for the Leafs and had a solid night, pitching five innings of one-run ball on his way to the win.

On the Welland side, it was José Domínguez who had a tough outing, allowing six runs on seven hits over five and a third innings pitched.

Welland got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI double from Greyson Barrett to take an early lead. The Leafs wouldn’t answer back until the 4th, when Spencer Ross came in to score on a throwing error.

Toronto blew the game open in the top of the 6th with a big six-run frame. It was a full team effort, with RBIs coming from Dan Marra, Jhon Javier, Jordan Castaldo, and Marcus Knecht, who homered to kick off the rally.

Toronto added on in the 7th on a passed ball that allowed Ryan Dos Santos to score—showcasing his excellent sprint speed. In the 8th, Castaldo hit a home run, followed by an RBI groundout from Ross to plate the Leafs’ 10th run of the night.

Welland attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the 8th, scoring four runs on a trio of RBI singles from Matteo Porcellato, Brendan Luther, and Brandon Hupe, but it wasn’t enough.

Toronto tacked on three more in the 9th with a home run from Dennis Dei Baning to reach the final score of 13-6. Luis Florentino came in to close things out in the 9th, striking out the side to secure the win for the Leafs.
