Woodbine Racetrack Game Report: Nothing Goes the Leafs Way in Blowout Loss to Jackfish

WELLAND - Back at it tomorrow.

The Welland Jackfish beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 13-1 on Saturday evening to improve to 24-8 on the season.

With the loss, the Maple Leafs fall to 19-13.

Welland ace Jake Harford won his league-leading ninth game of the season, allowing one earned run on one hit and three walks in seven innings pitched.

Jackfish third basemen James Smibert led the way at the plate, going three-for-five.

Toronto starter Angel Castro was solid before a handful of errors led to an unravelling, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits and one walk in six innings of work.

TORONTO - 1-1-6

WELLAND - 13-14-2

BIGGEST PLAY OF THE GAME: Tied at one in the bottom of the fourth inning, Jackfish shortstop Ethan Hunt hit a two-run RBI single to give the Jackfish a 3-1 lead.

Welland would go on to lead the rest of the way.

BY THE NUMBERS...

1. A season-low one hit for the Leafs on Saturday.

6. Six errors from the Leafs defence on Saturday, leading to four runs being unearned against Castro.

9. With just nine position players at the game, the Leafs had to have Castro hit for himself in the top of the seventh inning after Maple Leafs second basemen Dan Marra left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after taking a line drive off his face.

Marra left the game under his own power.

11. Their first loss since mid-July, so losses have been few and far between for the Leafs as of late, but when they have lost, errors have played a massive part, with the team making a combined 11 errors in their past two losses.

LOOKING AHEAD...

The Leafs seek revenge on the Jackfish when they host them on Sunday afternoon at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.
